‘I have just found out this morning that my Dad has cirrhosis.....from alcoholism which he hadn’t told anybody about but he looks like you in 2006. He had 9 litres of fluid taken from his stomach last week. He told me ‘I have cirrhosis....don’t tell anyone. Years on the booze did it’ .I told him ‘Derryn Hinch has just written a book about how he had cirrhosis and pulled through. My dad said, ‘no way! Well I hope I bloody pull through.’  I am not sure how he is going to go actually.’

‘Been drinking, heavily for 40 years. Like you, I also received the bad news, March 2008, started with a diagnosis of oedema, had 11 litres of fluid drained in about 8 hours, then diagnosed with cirrhosis, ascietes, low platelets etc. I’m 51. I am on the mend, slowly, but surely. I have not consumed alcohol for a year & I thought that it would be extremely difficult to abstain, but strangely enough, I haven’t missed it.
I only wish my friends would understand the damage they are doing to themselves & to those around them. I’m talking pissheads here. They are not social drinkers, they drink every day to the point of not ‘sleeping & waking up’, but more like ‘passing out & coming to’, then starting again. Nurses, Store Managers, Bar’persons’ , Security Officers, people with responsibility. If you’d seen what I’ve seen over the years........oh yeah, you probably have.’
