THE DEVIOUS DEAVES
I said on the program on Monday that there was something obscene on television, on Sixty Minutes, on Sunday night. The story of John and Jenny Deaves. The father who impregnated his daughter and they now have a nine-months-old baby.
They were presented on Sixty Minutes as a happy little family. Jenny said ‘It’s just a normal couple relationship’ and all they want is ‘a little bit of respect and understanding’. If it was obscene then, it gets worse.
Sixty Minutes reporter Peter Overton said on air that ‘ Nine-month-old Celeste seems blissfully happy and perfectly healthy. Despite the odds.’
What he didn’t tell you as I said on Monday was that they had had another incestuous baby back in 2001 and it had died of congential heart disease four days after its birth. That was in the public court records when they were found guilty of incest.
And it gets even worse. The Deaves and the TV program would have you believe that they met thirty years after the father/grandfather John Deaves had split with Jenny’s mother when Jenny was only one year old.
The TV story stressed that she had only seen her father ‘a couple of times’ in the intervening three decades. Not true. And their illegal, disgusting, relationship went back far further than they’d have you believe. It’s been going on for at least eight years –probably longer.
Deaves ex-wife Dorothy, not Jenny’s mother, has revealed that the couple met at a wedding in Sydney when Jenny was fifteen. She stayed with Deaves and Dorothy for a week the following year and ‘up until 2000 she stayed with us four times’.
In 2000 Deaves made a business trip, paid for by his daughter, to Dubbo Zoo and she met him there. When the father returned to Adelaide he told his wife he had slept with his daughter, whose marriage was breaking up, and said ‘I had the best sex I’ve ever had with her’.
The following year Deaves and his daughter had a baby which died.
One his children, a daughter from a second marriage, didn’t know about the incest until she saw it on television on Sunday night.
Two other points: John and Jenny Deaves were convicted of a crime. Incest. They were paid by Sixty Minutes. Shouldn’t that money be seized under the ‘no profit from crime’ laws?
Did the Deaves con Sixty Minutes or did the program ignore the real story because it got in the way of a good story. Remember Peter Overton has form on this. In his paid interview with Qantas hostess Lisa Robertson and her mile-high sexual encounter with actor Ralph Fiennes in an aircraft toilet he knew she also worked on the ground as a prostitute.
