ASH WEDNESDAY REMEMBERED
Today’s the Hinch radio program on Melbourne’s 3AW is a special broadcast from Macedon in the Macedon Ranges to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the Ash Wednesday bushfires, February 16, 1983.
It was a day when nature went to war with man and for a while nature won. At an awesome cost in lives, homes, livestock, native flora and fauna.
Out of it came stories of heroism and sacrifice as some of the worst bushfires in history swept through Victoria and South Australia.
Those stories and interviews with survivors, plus my own memories as a resident of Mt. Macedon at the time, are featured on a special Ash Wednesday Remembered page on www.3AW.com.au.
Read them, watch them and reflect. The Country Fire Authority is calling for a statewide minute’s silence at noon Saturday to pay tribute to those who fought those fires and the more than 70 people who died.
